CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY

cdn-cancer-society-logo

Since many members of United Rugby have been directly affected by cancer, the majority of our charitable work has been directed at raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society.  2006 was another year was United Rugby had multiple members lose loved ones to cancer.  Below is what we have done to help the Canadian Cancer Society find a cure for this disease.

BEN BOON CUP

Ben Boon was a member of Douglas Rugby Football Club before we merged with Pocomo Rugby Football Club to become United Rugby Club.  Ben was diagnosed and eventually passed away due to cancer, in memory of Ben we decided that our annual Boxing Day game would be held in Ben’s honour.  Since we hold the game in Ben’s honour, we use Boxing Day as part of our annual Canadian Cancer Society contributions.  The day starts out with the club converging on Queen’s Park (in New Westminster) and two teams are selected.    The Presidents Team (the youngest players that day) play the Captains Team (the old active and inactive players).  It is a perfect opportunity to have some fun playing rugby as well as burn some Christmas calories.  After the game, we all return to the clubhouse where we can hear about how good the old guys were and how great the young guys will be.  The festivities include awarding the trophy to the winning team, an excellent meal and before the day is done players, alumni, friends and family all put money towards cancer.

In 2007 we raised $705 in Ben’s name our second largest single year total ever.

Our total raised is now $5731.55 in memory of Ben Boon.

Relay for Life

In 2005 the women’s team decided that they would enter a team in the Canadian Cancer Society's: Relay for Life. This decision was predicated on the death of Lindsay (Bugs) Hare’s father, Peter.  Since many of the girls had been directly affected by cancer, they thought that this would be an appropriate cause to fundraise on behalf of.  The all day event is both fun and rewarding, and keeps the ladies busy all year round thinking of new ways to generate funds. Some of which have been: pub nights, clothing sales, club events and raffles...stay tuned for this year's Amazing Race!!!

In 2006 we raised $2260 for the Relay for Life.

Our total raised is now $4543.56

GRAND TOTAL RAISED FOR CANCER DECEMBER 31, 2006
