United Rugby capped a very successful season by winning both games in The Province League 1 and The Province League 2 Finals on Saturday May 9 at Brockton Oval in Stanley Park. It marks the first time in United’s 6 year history that this has occurred.
First Division wins 12-8
United’s First Division side earned their right to play in the Finals by way of a 4-1 first place record in The Province League 1. United’s only loss came at the hands of Port Alberni and United would be looking to avenge that defeat. Things would be tough as it was learned before that due to injury United’s MVP inside centre Joe Patko of Terry Fox would be unable to play. Patko has been a standout for the club all year by hammering opponents defensively and offensively.
United led 7-3 at the half on a try from winger Joe Bukalese. While Bukalese used his pace to finish the play, United’s backs displayed their skill in producing the opportunity. The conversion was nailed by Nick Hammerschmidt. The game, while featuring only 3 tries, was exciting to watch as both clubs exhibited strong defense and gave no quarter.
United crossed again in the second half as winger Manar Kulkan touched down in the corner. Port Alberni answered back not too long after to again make it a one score game. United was forced to defend vigorously after that. Port Alberni maintained possession in the United end for what seemed like hours until the unyielding United defense forced a turnover. A final whistle has never sounded so sweet.
